1907 Born in Berlin, Prussia, to Arthur and Ernestine Segal. Arthur Segal is a painter from Romania.
1914 Walter and his parents move to Ascona in Switzerland. They live in a house near the artists colony of Monteverita
1918 The family move to Interlaken, Switzerland
1920 The family move to Berlin
1925 (approx) Walter studies architecture in Berlin
1932 Walter designs and builds a summerhouse for his father's patron Bernard Mayer in Ascona
1933 The family moves to Mallorca, where Walter studies Balearic buildings and designs two houses
1934 Walter goes to Egypt to work as a tomb surveyor at the German school of Archeology in Cairo
1935 Walter comes to the UK to work in the British Museum's Egyptology department
1936 Walter arranges for his parents to be evacuated from Mallorca and come to London
1936 Walter begins teaching at the Architectural Association. He meets family friend and architecture student Eva Bradt and they eventually marry
1948 Their son John Segal is born
1950 Eva Bradt dies
1963 Walter marries Moran Scott
While rebuilding their home in Highgate Walter builds a temporary structure in the garden using standard cladding materials and with no foundations other than paving slabs. It took two weeks to build and cost £800.
1970s Lewisham council makes three sites available for Segal's self-build development
1982 Segal Close completed
1985 Walter Segal dies
1987 Walters Way completed
